South is a Mac email client made by Seghedi Robert-Mihai PFA (“South”, “we”), 136 Bucureștii Noi Boulevard, Ground Floor, Apt. 5, District 1, Bucharest, Romania, registered with the Romanian Trade Register under no. F2023004299405, tax ID (CUI) 48295402. We are the data controller for the little information described here. This page lists, plainly, what we learn about you and why. It's short because the list is short.

Your mail

Your messages, contacts, folders and settings stay on your Mac. South connects directly from your Mac to your mail provider. We don't operate any server your mail passes through, and we never see, store or analyse it.

Your license

When you start a trial or buy South, our license server stores:

• your email address, to send your key and receipts;
• an anonymous identifier for each Mac you activate (a one-way hash, not your Mac's serial or hardware ID), and the name of that Mac only if you choose to show it in your device list;
• the South version and the time of each license check.

We use this to deliver and check your license and to let you manage your devices. The legal basis is the contract between us. We keep it while your license is active and for two years after your last license ends afterwards, unless the law requires longer (for example, for invoices).

Payments

Our Merchant of Record is Sold through Link, LLC (“Link”), 354 Oyster Point Boulevard, South San Francisco, California 94080, United States, with payments processed by Stripe. Link collects and processes your payment and billing details as an independent controller, under its own privacy policy, and issues your invoice. We never see your card number. Link shares with us only what we need to deliver your license and support you: your name, email address, country and what you bought.

Updates

Once a day, and when you choose Check for Updates, South downloads a small public file from south.email that lists the latest version. Like any web request, it carries your IP address and South's version number. It carries nothing about you, your Mac or your mail, and we don't keep logs of these requests beyond what our hosting provider needs to serve them. You can turn automatic checks off in South's settings. Every update is verified against our signature on your Mac before it's installed.

The assistant

By default the assistant uses a model running on your Mac. If you add your own key for a cloud provider (such as Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI or Google), the messages you ask about are sent from your Mac directly to that provider under your account and their terms. They never pass through us, and South shows you what is sent before you turn it on.

This website

This site uses no analytics. Checkout happens on Stripe's page, only after you click a buy button. The only cookie is the one that keeps you signed in to your account, set when you sign in and removed when you sign out; it's strictly necessary, so there's nothing to consent to.

Your account

To sign in to your account we email you a one-time link. We keep a record of these links and of your sign-in sessions (by email address, never your password, since there isn't one) for up to 30 days.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct, export or delete the license data we hold, or object to its use, by writing to hello@south.email or to Seghedi Robert-Mihai PFA, 136 Bucureștii Noi Boulevard, Ground Floor, Apt. 5, District 1, Bucharest, Romania. You can also complain to the Romanian data protection authority (ANSPDCP) or the one where you live.
